How Flutes are Used in Healing:

Ancient stories and stone carvings indicate that the flute, like the drum and rattle, has been made and played for tens of thousands of years. These instruments have always been considered gifts from the Spirits. Oral tradition often conveys the circumstances under which these gifts came to the people. Many cultures of the world have used flutes in rituals and ceremonies of all sorts: Chinese transverse flute, traditional Indonesian flute which has whistle type mouthpiece (similar to playing the recorder) and six finger holes, traditional Japanese flute which has a whistle type mouthpiece with four finger holes and a traditional tuning from the Solo region of Java (B C# D F# G B), the shakuhachi which is an end-blown flute tuned to a pentatonic (5-note) scale from Japan, the flutes of India made of bamboo are either end blown or transverse in keys ranging from (C-A-B-C), and pan flutes from South America, which originated from the ancient Inca and Mayan civilizations, spread throughout the entire territory of the Americas.

Native American Flutes:
The Native American flute is a simple musical instrument, traditional to many indigenous cultures of North America. Often called "the love flute" because of its potent sweet quality, it was often used by young men in courting. The legends and stone paintings of Kokopelli, the hunchback flute player, abound in the southwest United States where he came to many people, bringing his gifts and song. The flute was and is used by many tribes as a sacred instrument, to offer prayer through the power of song. It is by far one the simplest instrument to play which we offer. I often tell people if you can blow out a candle, you can make a sound on this flute. It is that easy. These flutes are traditionally tuned to minor pentatonic scales (5 holes, 5 notes), which make them especially easy to learn musically.

Bamboo Native American Flutes:
They are available in major Western scales (diatonic: 6 holes, 8 notes) as well. (Please specify when ordering.) We offer this design of the traditional Native American Flute. Made of bamboo, with a hardwood "bird" fitting, and rawhide strap, you will find these instruments have as rich and haunting of tones as the more traditional cedar and hardwood flutes, which are also available.

| Shakuhachi Flutes
(pronounced Sha'-koo-ha'-chee) |
The shakuhachi is a traditional Japanese end-blown bamboo flute. Its history is steeped in myth and lore of Samurai warriors who became Bhuddist monks. The secrets of the shakuhachi were locked in traditional contemplative societies for centuries until the Emperor brought the instrument into his court, and eventually to the general public, in the 19th century. Our shakuhachi flutes are tuned to traditional minor pentatonic scales utilizing digital quartz tuners. The shakuhachi’s rich, unique tonal quality is unlike that of side-blown bamboo flutes. Though more difficult to play, it is preferred by many because of its haunting tonality and meditative quality.

Bamboo Stem Shakuhachi Flutes:
While the traditional shakuhachi is made of the root stalk of the bamboo plant, most people are satisfied with our basic design made from the stalk of the plant close to the root. They come with warranty and complete instructions. These bamboo stem flutes sell for much less than the root stalk flutes. It is a good style for beginners.

South American Ocarina Flute:
The Ocarina is descended from the clay whistles of Pre-Columbian South America. The modern Ocarina can range from the very small, Soprano to the very large Great Bass. They can be in a variety of keys and be made out of wood, clay or stone. An interesting note: during World War II, the U.S. Government issued plastic Ocarinas as morale boosters for its soldiers.

Transverse Bamboo Flutes:
Transverse flutes (which simply means flutes which are blown across), are some of the oldest and simplest instruments in the world. Most cultures of the world have some type of transverse flute. Because bamboo grows in most tropical and temperate climates of the world, many cultures use bamboo flutes as their primary wind instrument. Their ease of play makes them a natural choice for many people looking to enter the musical arena, while their richness of tone and great flexibility make them an excellent selection for the experienced musician as well. These instruments are well-tuned to major keys with a quartz tuner. They are fully chromatic (play all sharps and flats), with a minimum 1-2 octave range. They have an individually colored burnt-tone lacquer finish, and come with warranty, instructions, and songbook. Flute bags are available for the care and preservation of your instruments.

| This grade of flute is close to professional quality, but will have some discrepancy in pitch, usually one or two notes in the upper range. Most experienced players will be able to use techniques such as bending to make these perfectly playable flutes.
