How Drums are Used in Healing

The drum has been used for healing purposes throughout the world for thousands of years, in tribal societies with their shamanic traditions to communicate with the spirit world, as well as a tool for social integration and to restore harmony. According to West-African wisdom teachings, emotional disturbance manifests as an irregular rhythm that blocks the vital physical energy flow. As regular even rhythms are regarded as a sign of health, these rhythms can heal the person by touching him or her in an immediate and powerful way, removing blockages and releasing tension. Thus dance and drumming serve as preventive remedies, and they help people to become more aware and balanced. According to Layne Redmond, author of When Drummers Were Women, "The frame drum have been used for thousands of years in the act of worship in the Mediterranean world. Ancient sources say that the frame drum was not just a powerful symbol of spiritual presence, it was an important tool for many spiritual experiences."

According to current medical research, stress is a cause of 98% of all disease. Not only heart attacks, strokes, immune system breakdowns, but every disease known, with the exception of two viruses, has now been linked to stress. Recent biofeedback studies show that drumming along with our own heartbeats for 15 minutes alters brainwave patterns (increasing alpha) and dramatically reduces stress. So drumming actually "meditates" us.

Frame Drums
Technically speaking, a frame drum is any drum whose head diameter is larger than its shell depth. More practically, it is a hoop-shaped drum with a skin on one or both sides. Most cultures have some type of frame drum; the Egyptian Riq, the Brazilian Pandeiro, the Kanjira from South India, the North African Tar, the Persian Deff, Moroccan Bendir, the Bhodran from the Celtic countries, and the Native American versions are but a few. The frame drum most Westerners are familiar with is the tambourine. Frame drums are among the oldest and most versatile of drums. See our wonderful catalog of frame drums from a variety of cultures listed below.

Cherokee / Blackfoot Frame Drum

Hand frame Drums by our Cherokee/Blackfoot drum maker, are made with eastern cedar frames, and cow or elk skins. They come with a simple beater. Can be made with either 1/2 wrap (sides visible, as in photo,) or full wrap (wood frame fully covered.) We recommend 1/2 wrap in order to see the beauty of the cedar (see photo.) These are exquisitely beautiful drums, but the wood is a little thicker, and therefore heavier, than many contemporary drums.

Bendir Frame Drum

The drums of the Maghreb of North Africa come in many shapes and sizes, and bear a lot more resemblance to their Middle Eastern counterparts than they do to their African. The bendir is a frame drum made from wood and covered with animal hide. Inside the head of the bendir are a number of thin strands which stretch across the inside of the head, causing a vibration not dissimilar to a snare drum when the head is hit. Drums such as the snared bendir are rarely found anywhere else in the Middle East because it is a traditional Berber instrument dating centuries.

Tar Frame Drum

A frame drum with a single head, played with the hands. Often has a hole in the rim for the left thumb. This drum is found all over North Africa and has many names and one of them is Tar. It is common throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East also. Traditionally, this drum is played with the fingers, holding the drum in front of you, drumhead facing out. You can use your hand or a stick if preferred. Skin headed Tars are very temperature sensitive and will crack if left in the heat, such as in direct sun or in a car. If the drumhead is too tight, lightly mist with water.

Kanjira Frame Drum

The kanjira is a very old percussion instrument most known for its use in South Indian classical performances. Our khanjira are made from a solid piece of local Egyptian wood, called Sarsouh with a Manta Ray fish-skin head and 1 brass cymbal set. The frame is about 7 inches in diameter and 3 inches in height. It comes in a nylon case. The traditional Indian kanjira is made with lizard-skin. For conservation reasons, and increased accessibility, we offer this kanjira with the Manta Ray skin; a close substitution in sound and aesthetics. If you are right handed, hold the kanjira in your left hand. The head is fixed, but you can vary the sound and pitch by applying pressure near the outer rim of the head with the left hand. Play as you would a deff or frame drum, by tapping and rolling with your fingers on the head and cymbal.

Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
