How Didgeridoos are Used in Healing
The didgeridoo or "Yidaki", as it is called in the Yolno language, is the traditional instrument played by the indigenous tribal people of Australia, and is used traditionally almost exclusively by men for music, in ceremony, and in ritual. Myths and legends abound about the didgeridoo and its relationship to the creation of the world in Aboriginal cultures. The "People", as they call themselves, are one of the oldest intact cultures surviving on this planet tracing their known origins back 40,000 years. Much of the ancestral knowledge about how the didgeridoo was used by the aborigines for healing still remains a secret today. However, what we do know is that the sound of the didgeridoo can transport a person into an altered state of consciousness through its trance-inducing tones. Each musician produces their own unique sound, which can be experienced in many different ways by the listener. Often visual images will appear while the listener allows the sound to enter their consciousness and create what are known as "sound archetypes." Bodily sensations may follow the thoughts as the music moves through the energetic field.
The didgeridoo is traditionally made from a eucalyptus tree called "Stringybark" which has been hollowed out by termites. By tapping on the fallen trees, the aborigines selectively determine the suitability and hollowness of the trunk, cut off both ends, and clean it out, thereby producing their didgeridoo. Today didgeridoos are often made from bamboo and other materials. It is played like a bass horn, giving off a deep, resonant drone sound, unlike any instrument you are likely to have heard before. The didgeridoo has been re-discovered and is used in contemporary settings for consciousness alteration by practitioners of shamanism, music therapists, and adventurers in consciousness.
Bamboo Didgeridoos
These Didgeridoos are made from bamboo and have a wax mouth seal, are burned with simple designs, and have a lacquer finish to give them longevity. They have every bit the tonal quality of the authentic Australian instruments, while costing far less. Complete playing instructions are included. Fine cloth cases are available to protect your instrument.
Sizes vary but usually are within 6 in. of upper length. 4 ft. didgeridoo is a very good starting instrument. Smaller sizes have less of the depth often wanted from a didgeridoo. Larger sizes are generally a bit harder to play, with breath and control. Experienced players often enjoy the larger sizes: 5 ft. is popular. Instruments are tuned, so ask by pitch and we will advise you what is in stock.

Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
