| Crystal bowls are very easy to play, and are often used during individual or group meditations. They are also a beautiful accompaniment to toning or chanting, and assist in evoking powerful vocal sounds. Crystal bowl sounds create a unique form of vibrational therapy, which powerfully vibrates with the person and around them bringing all things into a state of synch or entrainment. This resonance brings about a state of natural healing, as the body comes into resonance with its natural frequency, and into harmony with the whole being.
Crystals are fossilized water, formed when water combines with an element under certain conditions of pressure, temperature and energy. As a crystal, the element is able to express itself as a more unified and ordered being than in liquid form. Silica sand, combined with water becomes quartz crystal. Quartz crystals have many physical properties. They can transform, store, focus, and transfer energy. At this time in history we see the results of quartz crystals in microphones, radio and television equipment, timepieces, laser tools, and computers, to name a few. Specifically, the quartz crystal as a holographic light template is able to hold, transmit, and receive thought forms, and is fundamental to the memory "mother boards" of all computers.
Each crystal singing bowl is made of 98.9% silicon quartz. Crystal singing bowls are made of fused quartz crystal, making them incredibly resonant, producing a strong clear tone. The sand is dropped into a centrifuge containing a spinning mold, and at the proper instant, in the center of that mold, there is an electric arc torch that is ignited to approximately 4000 degrees centigrade. This process fuses the particles, and the bowl is created. The result is a synthesized form of absolute pure sound, which is able to send out a tone, perceptible by the ear for almost 2000 feet.
Our bodies have a natural affinity to quartz, since the human body is composed of many crystalline substances - the bones, blood and DNA are crystalline in structure, as well as the liquid crystal-colloidal structure of the brain. Even on a molecular level, our cells contain silica, which balances our electromagnetic energies. When working with crystal bowls, there may be profound effects on the organs, tissues, and cells, as well as the circulatory, endocrine, and metabolic systems. One of the greatest effects is a resonation, a harmonization, and balancing.
Through these pure crystal tones, the pure sounds affect the brain wave activity, and often alters consciousness. As different parts of the brain are affected, it releases hormones and neuro-chemicals, which can suppress pain, strengthen willpower, awaken creative talents, and allow new levels of relaxation and mental focus. It has been found that the wave patterns of different singing bowls produce a measurable wave pattern, which is equivalent to the alpha waves produced by the brain. Alpha brain state is reached during meditation and deep relaxation.
Crystal bowls come with a wooden stick that is covered with suede. The bowls can rest on a rubber "O Ring" base so that they are free to resonate without interference from the surface it is sitting on. As you move the stick around the outside perimeter of the bowl, it creates a harmonic tone that becomes stronger with each rotation. You will notice how quickly the bowl appears to be “singing.”
There are a re precautionary things to be aware of when playing these singing bowls:
- Do not place a person's head inside a crystal bowl while playing it.
- Do not strike or play bowl too loudly, especially near a person's head.
- Place bowls at least 12 inches apart, or the vibration may shatter a bowl.
