Suite

Steven Halpern is a key figure
in New Age music, pioneering the way in the 1970s, long
before the major labels got hold of it. According to Halpern,
his sounds will tune your aura, massage your chakras,
and stop you from smoking. Spectrum Suite was originally
released in 1975. Its 14 compositions float by in major-key
improvisations that never resolve. Instead, he sends notes
out into the clear air, the vibraphone-like tones of his
Fender Rhodes electric piano resonating like bells in
space. You don't follow Halpern's music, but float through
it. |

Suite

This recording marked the debut
of a music whose compositional structure was free and
intended for relaxation. Halpern built an entire career
around this concept and thanks to his serenely inspired
tinkling, along with the genre it spawned, thousands of
listeners have found a musical way to unwind and heal
from the stresses of life. Nowhere is this more apparent
than on Halpern's Serenity Suite, a 1999 release that
marries the sounds of tweeting birds and mountain streams
with a gentle piano and warm electric keyboards. It's

This recording sprang from a traveling
art exhibition called The Tent of Meetings. Hykes composed
the music for this project, which was based on the sacred
art of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. And for the first
time, Hykes incorporated actual words into his harmonic
chanting, sacred words common to those three religions,
words like "Hallelujah" and "Kyrie Fragments."
Hykes says, "It is the harmonic content of the words
which interests me. The harmonic content in a word can
be brought to life; it comes from the same place as a
pure vibration." |
