Music for Healing and Transition Program
The Music for Healing & Transition Program, Inc. (MHTP) is a 501c3 Not-for-Profit, Educational Organization Founded in 1995, and a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to training musicians with a transforming and innovative curriculum. Graduates of the Program bear the title of Certified Music Practitioner®.

The mission is to teach musicians how to provide live, acoustic, therapeutic music. MHTP's goal is to create healing environments in hospitals, nursing homes, and for hospice patients both in healthcare facilities and in their homes. An additional goal is to educate the healthcare profession as well as the general public to the importance of therapeutic musicians.

MHTP's vision is for Certified Music Practitioners® to be sought-after members of the healthcare team in hospices, hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare venues. These musicians should be recognized as bringing an essential service to the healthcare system. The organization began after two musicians read an article in The Folk Harp Journal by harpist Laurie Riley about her experience playing in the Intensive Care Unit for her father during a serious health crisis. In 1994 these musicians asked Laurie to help them initiate an organization that would train other musicians to play at the bedside.

MHTP was incorporated in the state of Texas in January 1995 as an educational corporation and became a 501 c 3 not-for-profit in June 1996. MHTP has offered its certification program nationally since 1995 at various sites, beginning in Houston, Texas.

MHTP graduates serve the ill or dying in many states in the USA, with some graduates working in Canada and a few in Japan. MHTP offers its educational program to people without discrimination in regard to religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability and ethnicity. The printed materials are available in Braille for visually impaired students. Many graduates work in hospices and nursing homes.

As of January 2007, MHTP has 450 graduates (Certified Music Practitioners®), with additional students working to complete the program in various sites around the country. Since the inception of MHTP, classes have been offered in: Virginia, New York, New Hampshire, Maryland, Ohio, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Washington, California, Oregon, Colorado, Missouri, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, and South and North Carolina.

MHTP also provides continuing education for its graduates via Biennial National Conferences, regional Enrichment Days, an on-line monthly newsletter, an on-line discussion group, instrument-specific support groups, and regional support groups. Their website provides nformation on the Program--Training Sites, E-Newletter, Conferences and Conference CDs, and Enrichment Days.

Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
