  • Researchers at CU-Boulder's Center for LifeLong Learning and Design developed the tools for creating a Community of Soundscapes as part of a long-term project they call "The Silence of the Lands." The researchers enlisted the help of 20 community volunteers, who recorded natural and urban sounds around the community using the center's digital recording devices or "sound cameras" outfitted with GPS mapping software. The software allows the recorded sounds to be annotated and placed on a map, which can be accessed online at www.thesilence.org.

     NEW BOOK:
  • Noise/Music: A Hitory by Paul Hegarty
    http://www.healingmusic.org/Marketplace/Books/Book-H.asp#NoiseMusicHistory

Noise/Music looks at the phenomenon of noise in music, from experimental music of the early 20th century to the Japanese noise, music and glitch electronica of today. It situates different musics in their cultural and historical contexts, and analyses them in terms of cultural aesthetics. Author Paul Hegarty argues that noise is a judgement about sound, that what was noise can become acceptible as music, and that in many ways the idea of noise is similar to the idea of the avant-garde. While it provides an excellent historical overview, the book's main concern is in the noise/music that has emerged since the mid-1970s, whether through industrial music, punk, free jazz, or the purer noise of Merzbow. The book progresses seamlessly from discussions of John Cage, Erik Satie, and Pauline Oliveros through to bands like Throbbing Gristle and the Boredoms, and also examines the concept of noise from a philosophical perspective.

     NEW RECORDING:
  • Flutes of Interior Time by Saruah Benson
    http://www.healingmusic.org/Marketplace/CDsAndTapes/CD-B.asp#FlutesOfInteriorTime

This CD is composed of two half-hour silver flute instrumental pieces created for deep meditation, relaxation, and healing by our dear sister in sound healing. Great for stress reduction and yoga! On one of the pieces ("Flutes of Interior Time"), Sarah Benson is accompanied by the India drone instrument called the tambura. The other piece ("Ecstatic Flutes") features Benson's flute playing in harmony with herself for an extraordinary sonic experience. You will listen with awe and reverence to the beautiful and sacred silver flute playing of Benson, the Divine Mother of Sound Healing. Tranquil, serene and utterly soothing, the music on this recording will allow you to journey to the temples of the ancient mystery schools, where the healing and transformational energies of sound were utilized to bring balance to the body, mind, and spirit. Sarah Benson is a master sound healer, teacher, and initiator into the mysteries of sacred sound. One of the original pioneering teachers in the arena of sound healing, she has been inspirational to many in this field, in particular demonstrating the healing power of unconditional love with sound. Benson is an embodiment of the Divine Mother, and has imparted this loving energy through her voice and music for over thirty years.

     NEW RESEARCH:
  • Rogers D.R., Ei S., Rogers K.R., Cross C.L., Evaluation of a multi-component approach to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) using guided visualizations, cranial electrotherapy stimulation, and vibroacoustic sound. Complimentary Therapies in Clinical Practice. 2007 May; 13(2): pp. 95-101.

This pilot study examines the use of guided visualizations that incorporate both cognitive and behavioral techniques with vibroacoustic therapy and cranial electrotherapy stimulation to form a multi-component therapeutic approach. This multi-component approach to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) was used to treat patients presenting with a range of symptoms including anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties. Clients completed a pre- and post-session symptom severity scale and CBT skills practice survey. The program consisted of 16 guided visualizations incorporating CBT techniques that were accompanied by vibroacoustic therapy and cranial electrotherapy stimulation. Significant reduction in symptom severity was observed in pre- and post-session scores for anxiety symptoms, relationship difficulties, and depressive symptoms. The majority of the clients (88%) reported use of CBT techniques learned in the guided visualizations at least once per week outside of the sessions.
